GINEBRA TAPS DAVID MURRELL FROM FREE AGENCY

Barangay Ginebra began its move to shore up its wing position by signing up free agent David Murrell on Thursday.

The pro league's official website made the official announcement of the Gin Kings' move through its transaction page.

Ginebra's wing position weakened after high-leaping forward Jamie Malonzo hurt his calf a week ago. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) results reveal a calf tear, which means he'll be out for at least six to eight weeks.

The 6-foot-6 Malonzo joins Jeremiah Gray and Aljon Mariano in the injured list, a situation that prompted coach Tim Cone to announce in a recent interview that the Gin Kings are in search for help from outside, whether through free agency or via trade.

The entry of Murrell could be one of several player movements for the league's most popular squad, which is currently in a weeklong respite.

"We try to be creative with our lineup composition," said Cone.

Murrell's entry into the injury-riddled Ginebra team was made possible after the Gin Kings moved veteran guard Jared Dillinger to the unrestricted free agent list.

The 27-year-old Murrell won the 2023 PBA Slam Dunk title in Passi City, Iloilo. He was traded to Magnolia, along with Abu Tratter by Converge in April 2023. The Fil-American forward, however, was used sparingly by Magnolia this season until he eventually became an unrestricted free agent.

Before taking the weeklong break, Ginebra chalked up its sixth win in nine starts after beating TNT, 87-83.

Meanwhile, Magnolia, which won its last four games, activated veteran forward Rome dela Rosa after recovering from ankle injury, while relegating guard Jio Jalalon to the injured/reserves list.
