AFTER ARWIND'S JERSEY RETIREMENT, WILL CABAGNOT'S NO. 5 BE NEXT?

WITH Arwind Santos' No. 29 retired by San Miguel, will Alex Cabagnot be the next one from the famed 'Death Five' to get the honor?

The decorated guard just laughed off the possibility.

"No, wala pang ganoon," he chuckled on Wednesday after he attended the jersey retirement ceremony for his former SMB teammate at halftime of the Beermen's 124-109 win over Blackwater  in the PBA Philippine Cup.

There's no question Cabagnot also deserves the distinction, being a vital part of San Miguel's dynastic run in the 'Death Five' era in the mid-2010s which saw the Beermen claim eight championships. Cabagnot was feted as the Finals MVP in SMB's run to the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup title.

But for the 41-year-old playmaker, all he feels is pride seeing Santos take his place among the proud franchise's greats.

"Seeing his jersey retired, it feels like a part of me was there, too," he said. "I'm one of Arwind's longest teammates and he's been the Batman for a long time and I've been his Robin. So I'm just honored to see him get this achievement."

As for his own jersey retirement, Cabagnot said he's just not that done yet.

Though he's no longer in the PBA after last playing for Terrafirma, he has been busy in the international field as he currently plays for Taiwan Mustangs in The Asian Tournament under coach Chris Gavina.

Maybe not now, but don't rule out Cabagnot's No. 5 joining those retired San Miguel numbers in the future.
